Navigating Dark Waters is a large 2D Wunderkammer or ‘cabinet of curiosities’ playing with the notions of wonder and the concept of the exotic 'charm of the unfamiliar'. COURTENAY has combined symbols and imagery that are both historical and autobiographical to tell a tale of exploration, navigation and encounters. The tale reflects on both the harshness of the journey, the shock of the new strange world and the impact then and now on its indigenous first peoples and land, with competing concepts of beauty and culture.
It is an unfinished tale that the viewers must complete by adding their own sense of curiosity, memory and creativity.
