For 20 years Thompson has found inspiration in the 3000 year-old sculptures from the Greek Cycladic islands. Continuing with the white elongated sculptural figures he is known for, Thompson now introduces multimedia, photography and painting. Along with these new mediums, Thompson brings an additional subject matter to his work, the pigeon - the only animal featured in Cycladic art.
Even the most avid pigeon hater will find beauty in what once housed pigeons, with a highlight of the exhibition being the beautifully composed series of photographs depicting these solitary dovecotes [ or ‘peristereonas’ in Greek ] set against barren landscapes.
The inclusion of the pigeon and props such as binoculars, imbues Thompson’s latest sculptures with subtle humour and personality. For Thompson, ‘these figures represent an enviable connection to nature and human contemplation. Their simplicity, [and] ability to survive’.
Peristereonas as a complete exhibition, is a fascinating encounter of the photographic historic dovecotes set beside contemporary sculptures inspired by the bygone era; their presence demonstrates the power of observation to represent personal and public mysteries.
