“I was first attracted to the simplicity and quietness but as I came closer I became aware of its intricate layering and how beyond that quietness, it was coming with a very powerful message.”
-- Hossein Valamanesh, judge for the Conrad Jupiters Acquisitive Art Prize 2006 (awarded to Susan Buret)
Boundaries, parameters of identity and unassuming political messages are weaved into Susan Buret’s latest exhibition Portraits of the Unknown. Through fragments of text and a decorative palette, patterning somewhat ethnic or tribal in appearance, is created. Upon close inspection, it becomes clear that the entire work is created from shredded and reconstructed government documents such as visas and passports, bringing to light current international debates on border protection and refugees. Hand- carved stamps of bomber aircraft (Flight Dreams) and razor wire (Razorsharp) are imprinted in controlled alignments giving an “Escher-like” impression of pretty motifs as found in the delicate weavings of rugs and textiles. Illusion gradually gives way to a hidden history and evidence of an individual’s passage.
